Have you ever wondered what your browser is doing in the background while you work?

Most people think of a browser as a simple window to the internet, but AI browsers are changing that. They can read what’s on a page, summarize it, translate it, gather information, and even help carry out tasks. That can feel like a huge productivity win, but it also introduces a new kind of risk if it isn’t managed properly.

The biggest issue is that many of these features rely on cloud-based processing. If an employee is viewing sensitive emails, client information, financial details, or internal documents, the browser’s AI assistant may be able to “see” that content as it works. In some cases, that can mean data leaves the device so the AI service can process it.

It becomes even more concerning when AI browsers can take actions, such as navigating sites while logged in and interacting with content. If a malicious webpage is designed to manipulate that behavior, it may be able to coax the browser into exposing information without the user realizing what’s happening.

None of this means AI browsers are a bad idea. They’re powerful tools with real benefits, but they need guardrails. Before rolling them out, it’s worth understanding where the data goes, how usage should be handled around sensitive information, and how IT can control settings, so convenience doesn’t quietly override security. If you want to adopt AI browsing safely, a risk assessment and clear guidance for staff should come first.
