Is Your Business Data as Secure as You Believe It Is?
Here is a number that should get your attention. Nearly seven out of ten IT leaders say data security is their top concern when updating or growing their systems. But when asked whether they could confidently pass a regulatory audit, only about one in three said yes.
That is a significant gap between what businesses think and what the reality actually looks like.
If you run a business, you may not think of yourself as managing a complex IT setup. But chances are, over the past several years you have added cloud software here and there. Maybe Microsoft 365, an online accounting tool, a customer management system, or a file sharing platform. At the same time, older systems or servers you installed years ago might still be running in the background.
That mix of old and new is completely normal. But it is also exactly where security risks tend to build up quietly.
When data lives in multiple places, it becomes much harder to answer the basic questions that matter. Who has access to what? How does information move between your different systems? Are there old platforms still holding sensitive customer data? Have access permissions been reviewed recently, or are they still set up the way they were three years ago?
Nothing feels wrong day to day. People log in, emails go out, files get shared. But underneath that, complexity can be stacking up in ways that are hard to see.
Add in the fact that many businesses are now using AI tools to improve efficiency, and the stakes get even higher. AI depends on clean, well-organized, accessible data. If the foundation is shaky, AI can actually make the problem bigger rather than better.
The good news is that this is fixable. You just have to be willing to take an honest look.
