Why AI Should Not Be Generating Your Business Passwords

It sounds like a great idea. You need a strong password, so you ask ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to create one. After all, these tools can write reports, build spreadsheets, and draft professional emails. Surely, they can handle a password?

The problem is that AI is built to predict what text should come next. That is what makes it so good at writing. But strong passwords need something completely different. They need true randomness, and that is not something AI is designed to produce.

Researchers recently put this to the test. They asked AI tools to generate secure passwords and the results looked impressive at first. Long strings of letters, numbers, and symbols. Online password checkers gave them high scores and said they would take centuries to crack.

But when the researchers looked closer, the real picture emerged. The passwords followed patterns. Some were near duplicates of each other. None of them contained repeated characters, which sounds fine until you realize that real randomness does include repetition. The absence of it was a sign the AI was following learned rules instead of generating something truly unpredictable.

The technical term for this is low entropy, which simply means the password is more predictable than it looks. That makes it easier to crack using automated tools that run through thousands of combinations in seconds.

Standard online password checkers do not catch this because they only look at surface level complexity. They see symbols and assume security. They do not see the hidden patterns underneath.

Even newer AI models are now warning users not to use chat generated passwords for sensitive accounts. That alone should give you pause.

The right solution is a dedicated password manager with a built-in generator. These tools use proper cryptographic processes that create genuinely unpredictable passwords. Your business deserves that level of protection.
