Windows 11 Adds a Powerful New Accessibility Feature: “Describe Image”
Have you ever opened a document or presentation and realized that an important image or chart doesn’t make sense without extra context? Maybe it’s a complex graph or a picture that clearly holds key details — but there’s no caption or explanation to help you out.
Microsoft knows how frustrating that can be — especially for people with visual impairments — and it’s working on a fix.
Meet “Describe Image” in Windows 11
A new Windows 11 feature called Describe Image is being tested, designed to make visual content easier for everyone to understand. It’s powered by on-device AI, which means it runs directly on your computer instead of relying on the internet.
On Copilot+ PCs — Microsoft’s latest generation of AI-powered Windows devices — you’ll find this feature in the Click to Do menu. Simply select Describe Image, and your PC instantly generates a clear, detailed description of whatever image, chart, or graph is on your screen.
Private, Secure, and Fast
The first time you use Describe Image, your computer will set up the AI models it needs. After that, everything happens locally — right on your device. No pictures or data are sent to the cloud, so your information stays private and secure.
Currently, the feature is rolling out to Windows Insiders using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel versions coming soon.
Why This Matters
At first glance, Describe Image might seem like a small update — but it’s a big win for accessibility and productivity.
Think about a colleague with a visual impairment who can now understand a complex chart instantly, without needing to ask for help. Or imagine an employee quickly scanning a report and getting a summary of the images inside without switching apps.
By turning visuals into words, Windows 11 helps people access information more easily and independently.
More Than Just Accessibility
Accessibility features like Describe Image aren’t just about meeting compliance standards — they’re about empowering people. When your team can access every piece of information, collaboration becomes smoother, productivity rises, and everyone feels included.
That’s not only good for your employees — it’s great for business.
The Bigger Picture
Microsoft continues to make thoughtful improvements to Windows 11 that quietly enhance everyday work. Describe Image is another example of technology adapting to people — not the other way around.
If you’re exploring Copilot+ PCs or planning to upgrade your business devices, this is one more reason to be excited about what’s next.
